If you’re dreaming of a family trip to Rocky Mountain National Park that’s fun, affordable, and packed with adventure, let us introduce you to one of Colorado’s best-kept family travel secrets: YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park.
We spent part of our 3-week Colorado vacation here, and honestly? It was one of the best decisions of the trip. Think summer camp vibes meets national park lodge — but with archery, hiking, horseback riding, and hot cocoa by the fireplace.
Here’s why YMCA of the Rockies might just be the ultimate home base for your next family getaway.

Why YMCA of the Rockies Is Perfect for Families
We spent four unforgettable nights at YMCA of the Rockies during our Colorado road trip, and our kids are still talking about it. When we first looked into booking, the cabins were completely full — but I kept checking back and eventually snagged a cancellation for a family cabin named Serenity. It was absolutely worth the persistence! We ended up spending nearly our entire stay on the property, only venturing out once for a trail ride into Rocky Mountain National Park. From nature and playtime to peace and quiet, everything we needed was right there.
The property sits right on the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, with easy access to hiking trails, incredible views, and wildlife that roam right through the grounds (yes, we saw deer just outside our cabin!).

Family-Friendly Lodging Options
- Cozy cabins with full kitchens (perfect for saving money on meals)
- Lodge rooms for smaller families or shorter stays
- Many cabins have mountain views, outdoor seating, and fireplaces — great for winding down after a day of exploring

Endless On-Site Activities for Kids and Parents
There’s something for every age and interest. And the best part? Most of these are either free or included in your stay.

- Archery, mini golf, basketball, and indoor swimming
- Craft center where kids can make tie-dye shirts, ceramics, and more
- Horseback riding, guided hikes, and nature talks
- Evening family programs like campfires, outdoor movies, and stargazing
Our favorites? Axe throwing (surprisingly fun for older kids, teens, and moms!), family archery, and the guided nature walk where we learned about the local wildlife.

Pro Tip: Be sure to sign up early for popular activities — some fill quickly in peak season.

Budget-Friendly and High Value for Families
Staying at YMCA of the Rockies gives you access to a resort-like experience without the resort price tag. Plus, with a kitchen in your cabin and most activities included, you can stretch your vacation budget without sacrificing fun.

We paid around $1,500 for four nights in a private cabin during peak season, which felt steep at first — especially since we’re used to $20–$30 tent campsites! Meals added a bit more to the budget: about $80 per night (plus tip) at the dining hall, which felt more like eating in a giant high school cafeteria than a family vacation spot. It’s great if you’re here for summer camp, but not ideal if you’re after a relaxing dinner. One night we ate at the Pine Room Restaurant instead — and it was SO good, with a quieter atmosphere and prices similar to the dining hall. I would highly recommend Pine Room Restaurant over the dining hall.
Lunches were a mix of DIY and visits to the on-site coffee shop ($35–$45 for the four of us). We also paid extra for a few activities — axe throwing, archery, crafts, the campfire cookout, and horseback riding — but appreciated that there were no weird studio fees or hidden extras. A couple of weeks before your stay, the YMCA emails a full list of activity options and prices, which really helps with planning. Between all of that and the free activities like the pool, museum, and guided walks, we felt like we got solid value for our money — especially during peak season.
Unbeatable Location Near Rocky Mountain National Park
From the YMCA, you’re just minutes from multiple park entrances. We loved being able to head out on our one off-site adventure — a scenic horseback ride into the park — and then return to relax and enjoy everything the YMCA had to offer.

Would We Stay Again? Absolutely.
YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park felt like a blend of summer camp and cozy mountain lodge — all designed with families in mind. If you’re planning a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park and want adventure, value, and downtime all in one place, this is hands-down one of the best lodging options for families.
