Where to Go in Colorado with Kids

Rocky Mountain National Park

A classic for a reason. Think wildlife, wildflowers, and family-friendly hikes with serious views. Don’t miss Bear Lake, Trail Ridge Road, and a stay at YMCA of the Rockies.

This Rocky Mountain National Park with kids guide includes easy hikes, wildlife spotting, scenic stops, and practical planning tips for families.

Estes Park

Estes Park is a charming mountain town right next to Rocky Mountain National Park. Elk sightings, cute shops, and loads of family lodging options.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

This dramatic, lesser-known national park completely surprised us — in the best (and windiest) way. The canyon walls are steep, the views are unforgettable, and it’s a lot less crowded than Colorado’s more famous parks. We camped here… and almost lost our tent to the wind! Picture us scrambling to tie it down with 18 guylines — and eventually anchoring it to the picnic table just to keep it grounded. Our kids thought it was hilarious (and a little thrilling), and it’s one of those wild camping memories we’ll never forget. There are short hikes with amazing canyon overlooks, and the whole park feels raw and wild — a great stop for families looking for something off the beaten path.

Steep cliffs, quiet trails, and serious wow factor—Black Canyon of the Gunnison was a total surprise hit for our family.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Slide down towering sand dunes, splash in Medano Creek, and camp under the stars. One of the most unique (and underrated!) national parks for kids.

Yes, this is Colorado! Giant sand dunes + mountain views = one unforgettable stop.

Colorado Springs

Don’t miss Garden of the Gods, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and ride the cog railway to the summit of Pikes Peak.

If you’re looking to balance mountain time with something a little more relaxed, Colorado Springs makes a great addition to a family Colorado itinerary. We’ve shared our favorite kid-friendly activities there — perfect for breaking up a road trip or adding variety to your plans without overpacking the schedule.

Denver

Colorado’s capital city is more than just an airport hub — it’s a fun, walkable, and family-friendly destination that’s perfect for kicking off or wrapping up your Colorado adventure. Families can explore hands-on exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Denver, see dinosaurs and space displays at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, or enjoy a sunny afternoon at City Park with views of downtown and the Rockies. Denver is also a great place to find kid-friendly restaurants, gear shops, and groceries before heading into the mountains. Whether you’re stopping for a night or staying for the weekend, Denver offers a little something for everyone

Family Tips for Traveling Colorado

  • Altitude matters. Start slow, drink water, and build in time to adjust.
  • Pack layers. Colorado weather can change fast — especially in the mountains.
  • Book early. Lodging near national parks and hot springs can fill up months ahead.
  • Plan a mix of activities. Balance hiking and sightseeing with some downtime (and ice cream stops!).
  • Don’t skip the small towns. Some of our best memories came from little mountain towns with no lines and big charm.
