What to pack for a fun, low-stress beach getaway with kids.
We’ve just returned from a 3-day family beach trip—me, Chris, our two girls, my sister, and my 17-year-old niece. It was the perfect mix of sunshine, sandy toes, and family chaos! While we were there, I kept track of what we actually used (and what we wish we’d brought), so I could put together this practical, family-tested beach vacation packing list.
If you’re wondering what to bring to the beach with kids, this list covers the essentials—and a few unexpected game-changers too.
🧳Clothing (Per Person)

- 1-2 swimsuits/swim short
- 1–2 swim cover-ups
- 3 casual daytime outfits (shorts/t-shirts/dresses)
- 1 nicer outfit for dinner out
- Lightweight pajamas
- Flip-flops or sandals
- Water shoes (for rocky beaches)
- Sun hat or cap
- Sunglasses
- Underwear and socks
- Light hoodie or sweater (or chilly evenings or overzealous air-con)
- Rain jacket (if needed)

🧴 Toiletries & Health
- Sunscreen (reef-safe, SPF 50+)
- Lip balm with SPF
- After-sun lotion (aloe or similar).
- Toothbrush, toothpaste & floss
- Hairbrush, hair ties
- Shampoo/conditioner (travel-size)
- Shower gel/body wash
- Moisturizer
- Baby wipes (great for sandy hands)
- Bug spray
- Basic first-aid kit
- Any medications or allergy meds
🌿 Top Tip:
Keep your after-sun lotion in the fridge! A doctor once recommended this to me before a beach holiday, and I’ve done it ever since. Applying chilled after-sun feels, incredibly, soothing on sun-kissed skin — especially for little ones who may have had a bit too much sun. Total game-changer!
🏖️ Beach Gear

- Beach towels (1 per person, plus 1 spare)
- Sand toys & buckets
- Beach blanket or mat
- Sunshade, tent, or umbrella
- Cooler bag or box
- Reusable water bottles
- Beach chairs (optional)
- Mesh bag for wet items/shells
- Dry bag for valuables
- Waterproof phone pouch
- Floaties or boogie boards
- Beach ball, inflatable ball, or soft football
Great for all ages — toss it in the waves, play catch, or get a family game going on the sand - Change of clothes
- Swim diapers (if needed)

Paddle Boarding Fun (and a Few Things to Know)
We brought our inflatable paddle boards to the beach for the first time, and they were a big hit—with our kids, teenage niece, and even the grownups! The calm water made it safe and fun, and we made sure everyone wore buoyancy aids (kids always had a grownup with them too). Our inflatable boards were easy to pack and set up, and it ended up being such a fun way to mix up the usual beach trip.
If you ever get the chance to try paddle boarding at the beach, especially on a calm day, we totally recommend it!
🍉 Snacks & Food
- Pre-packed snacks (crackers, bars, fruit)
- Juice boxes or pouches
- Easy picnic lunches (sandwiches, wraps & fruit)
- Refillable water bottles
- Water
- Favorite kid treats (cookies, potato chips)
- Ice packs & cooler
- Paper towels, wipes, napkins
🎲For Downtime / Evenings
- Travel-sized board games or card games (Uno, Guess Who, Spot It!)
- Books or activity pads
- Coloring supplies (crayons, markers, notebooks)
- Favorite stuffed animals or bedtime toys
- Eye masks – our girls had a mezzanine bedroom with a huge window and no curtains.
- Lightweight blanket for cozy evenings
🎧 For Teen Downtime / Evenings
- A good book or magazine
- A deck of cards (Spades, Scum, Hearts, etc.)
- Travel-size games (Uno, Bananagrams, Skyjo)
- Bluetooth speaker for music or chill playlists
- Journal or sketchbook
- Cozy hoodie or blanket
- S’mores kit or beach treats for evening chats
- Flashlight for late-night beach walks or games
- Polaroid or phone for fun candid shots
- A ball or frisbee for sunset games
Even teens who “aren’t into playing” often get roped in once someone starts a casual game after dinner. Think low-pressure fun, not organized competition.
đźš— In the Car
- GPS or directions saved offline (Google Maps is my go to)
- Large bottle of water to rinse off feet
- Snacks for the drive
- Trash bag or car organizer
- Travel pillow or blanket
- First aid kit
- Extra beach towel or change of clothes
đźš— Top Tip:
Sand and sunscreen have a special talent for getting everywhere in your car. Do what you can to stay ahead of the mess — lay down old towels or seat covers, pack a small handheld brush or dustpan, and keep wipes within reach. But also? Accept that there will be cleaning to do. It’s part of the beach magic — and it’s worth it.
🌊Beach Days, Here We Come!
No matter where you’re headed, a little preparation can make all the difference. With this list, you’ll be ready for sandy toes, salty air, and stress-free beach days—whether you’re chasing waves, building castles, or just soaking up the sun. Pack smart, stay safe, and most importantly, enjoy every moment by the shore with your family.
